The building was built to the standard union workshouse administration block design prepared by George Wilkinson, architect to the Poor Law Commissioners in Ireland at the time.
Ballyshannon Workhouse is a well proportioned former workhouse administration block in a Tudoresque architectural style. The block has stayed true to its character over the years and has many interesting features including limestone surrounds and redbrick chimneystacks.
